Meratus Mountain Trek

Duration: 9 days / 8 nights; Number of pax: 2, 3-6, 7-10; Type of accommodation: Tent/bivouac, communal house, riverside cottage, hotel in town; Type of transportation: Plane, mini bus, river boat, bamboo raft; Start/end: Jakarta/Banjarmasin; Grade of difficulty: Challenge to Hard

Day 1: Banjarmasin-Barabai    Pick up from hotel in Banjarmasin or Banjarbaru or airport, drive to the towan of Barabai fro about 2-3 hours including en-route stop for rest and taking photographs if finding something interesting. Arrive in Barabai in the afternoon, finalization of preparation for the trekking including to buy some logistic at local market in Barabai. Night at hotel in Barabai

Day 2: Barabai-Batu Kambar-Sungai Karuh   Breakfast at hotel then by local ransport to Batu Kambar Village for about 45 mintues. In Batukambar you will meet your porters who will help to carry logistic and equipments for camping in the rain forest. You start trekking to hike up a hill call Paniti Ranggang for about 3-4 hours and down to the campsite on Sungai Karuh for about 2 hours. Set up tent or bivouac by the river side. 

Day 3: Sungai Karuh-Gunung Besar (Halau Halau)-Sungai Karuh  Today you will have one full day to explore the rain forest around the camp but the main target to to recah the peak of Gunung Besar or sometimes called Gunung Halau Halau, about 1,982 meters above sea level. You start from 500 meters above sea level. This is a full day climbing (to go up and go down). When you reach its peak you will have magnificent view to surrounding area. Along the path to the top you might see a number of orchids and plant called Rhododendron alborugosum, a plant endemic to this mount . Animal is probably difficult to see but  you can still hear echoing call from gibbon and hornbill. Going down to the camp site at Sungai Karuh. You will stay one more night at this camp. 

Day 4: Sungai Karuh-Muara Maliau   You will do the trekking through the rain forest, crossing streams and hike up and down the hill on Meratus Mountain range. Just prepare yourself because leeches might be everywhere. After 6-7 hours you will arrive at Muara Maliau campsite. Set up tent or bivouac for overnight. 

Day 5: Muara Maliau-Kambatang   You Still trek in the rain forest. Trekking condition is not much different as previous day. It takes more or less 6-7 hours trek. You still stay for overnight at tent or bivouac. 

Day 6: Kambatang-Sulangai   The trek today is still up and down through the rainforest and hilly land. After about 3-4 hours you will walk down to village of Sulangai. Stay for overnight at a communal house. People who inhabit this communal house are indigenous of Meratus People. They still practice animism and slash and burn system when cultivating their land. In the evening, if you are not tired, is good time to chat with people in the communal house to get to know about their life. 

Day 7: Sulangai-Loksado-Muara Hatib   Leaving Sulangai communal house, hiking through secondary forest or, plantation or shifting cultivation rive field to Loksado. Probabli short break in Loksado and then by local transport for about 20 minutes to Muara Hatib; the end of your trekking. Time to relax and cooling down. Swimming on Amandit river is possible. Stay at nice accommodation situated by side of Amandid River.

Day 8: Muara Hatib-Bamboo Rafting-Bubuih-Kadangan-Banjarmasin   Wrap your camera and other valuables into a plastic bag because you will be on the bamboo rafting wading through rapids on Amandit River. Animals are rather difficult to see. However, with luck you might see Long-tailed Macaque and some birds such as kingfisher (Stork-billed Kingfisher, White-collared Kingfisher), sunbirds, bulbuls and eagles. In some parts of the river water are more wild but your skillful raft-man will help to pass these parts. Bamboo rafting trip will take about 3 hours to Bubuih Village. From Bubuih go by car to Kandangan for having lunch at local restaurant and then proceed to Banjarmasin for about 2.5 hours driving. Stay for overnight at hotel in Banjarmasin. 

Day 9: Banjarmasin-Floating Market-Airport-Next Destination   Early start at 05:30, go on board a wooden boat from a small pier near the hotel and head to the floating market on Martapura River. Doing selling and buying activities on the boat or canoes is a part of history and life for people in Banjamrmasin because rive has become transportation media for people here since centuries ago. All selling and buying activities at this market are done from the boat and mostly done by women. On the way back to Banjarmasin you can witness morning activities along Martapura River. Transfer to airport and fly back to Jakarta or to the next destination. Your journey ends.
