Baliem Valley Trek

Day 1: Arrival Sentani Upon arrival in Sentani, the city of the airport, transfer to accommodation and short briefing about the program. Afternoon exploration to the Lake Sentani including to visit Ase island, a small island on the lake where people produce handicraft made of the bark of the tree. This bark is like canvas where local people draw the pattern and motif of Papua. Night at hotel not far from the airport. (BLD)
Day 2: Sentani-Wamena By morning flight to Wamena, the main city on the Baliem Valley. Wamena is situated on the altitude of 1,600-1,700 m above sea level and the center for government and trading activities for people from all over the highland districts. Here in this city we can still see men from the village walking in town dressing with their traditional dress called “koteka”. Temperature is Wamena is chill but fresh. Enjoy the afternoon by exploring the city including the local market. Night at comfortable hotel in town. (BLD)
Day 3: Wamena-Yetni-Ugem (night at “honai”)
Day 4: Ugem-Kilise (night at “honai”)
Day 5: Kilise-Kurima-Wamena (night at hotel)
We will have almost three full days to explore the Baliem Valley, the land of Dani Tribe. First we go by car from hotel to the starting point for trekking where our porters also wait. From this place we start our trekking. We will cross Baliem River using a suspension bridge and then hike along the paths on the ridge of the hill. These paths are used by people to travel on foot from village to village. This is like “trans Baliem Valley paths”. Sometimes we meet local people walking in a group from other villages about 1-2 days walking. They leave their village going to Wamena to buy such as salt, sugar, tobacco, cigarette, medicines and other factory products. Women on the group carry goods with their famous and multi-function basket called “noken”. This “noken” also functions as baby carrier. We will also pass cultivated land by Dani people whose work with only crowbar to dig-up the soil for growing sweet potato. To avoid from wild boar or pig destructing the sweet potato plantation, Dani people build fences by piling up limestone. This fence also has function as the border between each sweet potato plantation. Many men still wearing their “koteka”, a male genital sheath made from special gourd when working on the farmland or walking around the village. The trek is up and down hill for about 3-4 hours sometime 6-7 hours but the view very beautiful and the landscape is breathtaking. In the night we will stay for overnight in special Dani “guest house” the same as their traditional hut called “honai”. In the afternoon while staying at Dani’s village, we will do an excursion to explore surrounding area.
On Day 5 we will hike down to the main road where the car waiting and drive us back to Wamena. Stay for overnight at comfortable hotel (BLD)
Day 6: Wamena and Traditional Performance We will have opportunity to visit a Dani people compound not far from Wamena and here we will enjoy very interesting open are “tribal war performance” and stone burning ceremony. The rest of the afternoon is free program to enjoy chill afternoon in Wamena, walking around town or visit nearby local market. Night at hotel (BLD)
Day 7: Wamena-Sentani Fly back to Sentani. We will have almost full afternoon in Sentani. Gunung Ifar is recommended place to visit. From its top, almost 2,000 meter above sea level, we have breathtaking views to lake Sentani. Gunung Ifar is also known as General Douglas McArthus base when he set the strategies to take over the Pacific from Japan on the WWII. From Gunung Ifar we will make a visit to the capital of the province; Jayapura. The first 20 minutes we will drive along the side of Lake Sentani with very interesting view in some places. We will stop at the view point few kilometers before Jayapura. From this place we will have beautiful view to the Humboldt Bay or called as Teluk Yos Sudarso where the city of Jayapura is actually laid. We will then do excursion around Jayapura. Driving back to Sentani in the afternoon. Night at hotel near the airport. (BLD)
Day 8: Sentani-Next Destination Free program until transfer to the aiport for flying to the next destinations. Explration ends. (B).
