Encounter with The Koroways; Tree House Dwellers

Duration: 10 Days / 9 Nights; Number of person: 2, 3-6, 7-10; Type of Accommodation: Hotel, simple lodge, tent, tree house; Type of Transportation: air plane, motorized canoe, 4×4 vehicle, minibus; Start/End: Sentani; Grade of difficulty: Challenged to Hard (humid, river, roots, swamp and dense jungle trek)

A journey that will bring to penetrate deeper into the hinterland of Papua to encounter the first tribe recognized as tree-dwellers on earth. These people live from hunting, fishing and forest products gathering. For few days you will be brought to get in touch, follow and practice some of their ways of living. This is combination of dense rainforest trekking, river and swamp crossing with high humidity. Good physical condition is required.

Day 1: Arrival Jayapura (Sentani)   Arrive at Jayapura airport meet your guide,transfer to hotel,After lunch visiting lake sentani and back to hotel.,and prepare polise permit.

Day 2: Jayapura (Sentani)-Dekai-Sipanap Morning flight from Sentani to Dekai   Be prepare, flight on this route might be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather. Arrive in Dekai, transfer to the harbor and on board a longboat to start river journey to Sepanap for about 6 hours. Lunch will be prepared en-route. Stay for overnight in Sipanap at simple accommodation or camping

Day 3: Sipanap-Mabul   Again by long boat riding up to Braz River for about 3-4 hours with en-route lunch stop. Meet Koroway porters in Omoho and then together with them trek along the lowland rainforest for about 4-6 hours. Overnight stay in Mabul;

Day 4-6 : Mabul-Koroway Settlement   We will spend these days to explore the live of Koroway and try to be as close as possible with them. We will follow their daily activities; catching the fish, preparing sago palm, go hunting and if lucky we might see how Koroway people build their house up on tree. If you have strong nerve you can try sleep in their house up on tree.

Koroway people do not stay in one area for a longtime. They are kind of nomad people, moving from one area to other to follow the availability of sago palm, fish and hunting ground. In one area sometime we can only see 3-4 tree houses.

Day 7 :Koroway-Mabul-Dekai   Trek back to to Mabul and then by longboat downstream to Pepera Strait and proceed to Dekai. Overnight in Dekai

Day 8: Dekai-Sentani-Depapre-Beach Camp   Fly back to Sentani, transfer for about 45 minutes to Depapre harbor and by speed boat for about 20 minutes to Harlen beach. Here you will have opportunity to relax on the white sandy beach and swim on clear blue water. It is possible to snorkel on the reef area near by. Stay for overnight at beach camp. (BLD)

Day 9: Beach Camp-Depapre-Sentani   Enjoy the morning by swimming or snorkeling. After lunch transfer back to the harbor in Depapre and continue by car back to Sentani. Stay for overnight at hotel in Sentani. (BLD)

Day 10: Sentani-Departure   Transfer to the airport and fly to the next destination. Journey ends. (B)
